Speech of the Representative of the Philippine-Cuban Friendship Society (PCFS) and of the Philippine Peace and Solidarity Council (PPSC) at the 7TH Asia-Pacific Regional Conference of Solidarity with Cuba [Ha Noi, Socialist Republic of Viet Nam, Septemb

Esteemed members of the presidium,

Fellow delegates,

Dear militants of the Viet Nam Union of Friendship Organizations (VUFO),

Comrades and friends :

First and foremost, on behalf of the Philippine-Cuban Friendship Society (PCFS) and of the Philippine Peace and Solidarity Council (PPSC), I would like to thank the Viet Nam Union of Friendship Organizations (VUFO) for kindly hosting this 7th Asia-Pacific Regional Conference of Solidarity with Cuba. I also would like to express my warmest greetings to our fellow delegates who have travelled a long way to come here, to this Hero City of Ha Noi, to show their militant solidarity with the Cuban government and people who are upholding their sovereign right to a socialist path of national progress.

And of course, the Philippine–Cuban Friendship Society (PCFS) and the Philippine Peace and Solidarity Council (PPSC) would like to take this opportunity to salute the “Cuban-5” on their great victory, their complete freedom and vindication after more than 16 years of unjust and cruel incarceration in US jails ! We consider it a great honor to be here, in the presence of Comrade Antonio Guerrero Rodriguez who is one of the 5 Cuban Heroes.

A historic victory has been scored with the acknowledgment by US President Barack Obama that the US policy of hostility and blockade against Cuba in the past five and a half decades had failed, and that instead of isolating Cuba, it only led to the international isolation of the USA. Obama’s new policy of “engagement” through the normalization of diplomatic relations is proof that US hostility and blockade cannot deter Cuba’s path of socialist construction.

The extremely difficult but glorious path blazed by the Cuban Revolution will continue to inspire not only all the organizations represented at this Regional Conference, but all forces for peace and national freedom worldwide, in the struggle against imperialism and for socialism.

In the current period of capitalism’s deep crisis, imperialism has more brutal methods of exploitation which are being imposed upon the working masses, leading to suppressed labour rights and more precarious social guarantees, to wider unemployment, more abject poverty and the withholding of the most basic necessities for millions of peoples.

Today, the resurgence of the fascist threat and the danger of a new war of great proportions are real and growing. Fascist revanchism has reared its head in Europe, particularly in the Ukraine and the Baltic states, egged on by imperialist sabre-rattling against Russia, and aiming at regime changes that will reverse the historic gains of the Great Patriotic War against nazism. In the Asia-Pacific Region, Japanese militarism is again on the rise, serving as a junior partner for the US pivot to contain a regional giant’s great-power ambitions and maritime expansionism. Inter-imperialist competition, in the global context of the general crisis of capitalism, is the source of the war danger everywhere.

With the ever-deepening structural crisis of capitalism, capitalist oligarchies on the national and international levels are attempting to emerge from this crisis by force, imposing brutal levels of exploitation, initiating new rounds of the arms race, attacking the sovereignty and territorial integrity of developing countries, and launching wars of aggression such as those against Syria, Iraq and the Lebanon, even with the use of proxy forces steeped in the venom of religious fundamentalism and sectarian chauvinism.

However, heightened imperialist aggressions in the Middle East and Africa, and inter-imperialist confrontations in Eastern Europe and East Asia, cannot solve the capitalist crisis. The present wars and confrontations can only expose the aggressive, inhumane and criminal nature of capitalism, and demonstrate the historical need for its overthrow. Humanity’s only alternative to the crisis-wracked exploitative and predatory capitalist system is socialism.

Cuba remains a prime example of successfully maintaining socialism despite economic sabotage, sanctions, invasion threats and assassination plots by US imperialism. With Cuba’s example, a new integration of economies along socialist lines is being forged in Latin America. The bold examples of Cuba, Venezuela and other ALBA countries in resisting imperialism are proving to be a beacon for many peoples and governments. We are confident that socialism will remain the core principle in Cuba’s present process of updating its economic model.

Under the new circumstances, especially during this time of heightened imperialist aggressiveness and interference, Cuba will be needing stronger support not only from solidarity and friendship organizations, but from all peace-loving peoples. Cuba will be facing new challenges : the lifting of the U. S. economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed upon Cuba ; the dismantling of the U. S. military base at Guantanamo, and its return to Cuba ; the realization of justice for all the victims of direct and indirect US terrorist actions against Cuba since the triumph of the Cuban Revolution ; and the defense of the ideals of independence, national sovereignty and socialism.

On this occasion, we reaffirm our commitment to continue working for the propagation and strengthening of the solidarity movement with Cuba in our country.

Hasta la Victoria Siempre !!!
